Many people and cultures believe ‘7’ to be a lucky number, and while most would contest these beliefs to be purely matter of opinion, in the context of today’s note, I’ll roll the dice and happily join forces with Camp Seven. 2020 is our seventh ‘season’ in Newport (note: loose use of the word season because we spend considerably greater time here than between the bookends of Memorial and Labor Day). Our first Summerset Series post was just about seven years ago and today welcomes the month of July, the seventh month and the peak of prime time to be enjoying the City-by-the-Sea.

Looking back on that first post in 2014, a glow sweeps across my face remembering the feeling when we took ownership of the property, fell in love with her original floors every time we crossed the threshold (which based on this photo, many of you would back us up on that one) and embarked on the journey of turning a quaint little cottage into a coastal abode. In the years since, we’ve lovingly dressed her in all our favorite shades of blue, filled her with precious treasures and most importantly, welcomed countless friends + family into every cozy corner her 1,040 square feet would allow.

Later this month, we’re scheduled to break ground on some significant renovations at the Gilded Getaway House. In 2018 we worked closely with a local Newport architect to reimagine the 1940’s house and breath new life into the space we plan to love for many more ‘seasons’ to come. After months of zoning board meetings, negotiations with neighbors and honestly, a much-needed break glass of wine to recoup from the exhaustion of it all, the time has arrived to transition from plans-on-paper to something tangible we can physically see + touch. I know many of you reading have a keen interest in design – join me as I make a brave attempt at sharing snippets of the delectable details through the process. Follow along with #tglsummersetseries for pint-sized servings, or, if like me you’re hungry for more, stick around here at Around the Pound for larger portions. Regardless where you choose to follow along, I promise the content will be occasionally golden, always deliciously creative.

Summer is in full swing at the Gilded Getaway House, which means a rotating guest list of family and friends. Some come for a day, others stay for a week, and most all never want to leave. More than three years ago, we set out to create a cozy, coastal retreat; slowly, and layer upon layer, Summerset has become a seaside haven – quintessential New England at its core, with a nod to life in the City-by-the-Sea. Sweet and subtle details have become our favorite addition, the finishing touches that make a house a home. This month, our #tglpreciousobjects are a collection of recent additions and in the spirit of hospitality, we’re spilling the beans on some of our go-to resources.

TGLJuly2014

Around the pound, ringing in our nation’s birth month was a happy highlight for 2014. For the past seven years, we’ve fêted our country’s independence from afar, (mind you, by from afar, we mean galavanting on the shores of Como and traversing the hills of Tuscany, so no, we’re not complaining). That said, to bask in the glow of fireworks on our own American soil felt especially sweet, made even more delightful by the fact we did so perched on a rock wall in our newly adopted City-by-the-Sea, in the dear company of family + friends.

Behind the scenes at Summerset, interior progress is in full swing. Thanks to our creative collaboration with Pallie-in-Design CFK Interiors, we’ve got delectable details coming together every way we turn. It seemed only fitting that we dedicate our July Precious Objects series to some of our favorite additions to the gilded getaway house, which is shaping up to be the perfect slice of seaside ingenuity we envisioned. Overdyed indigos, crisp linen whites, reclaimed wood and awning stripes. And because it’s our utmost goal to live life by the golden rule, an abundance of classic style with a ‘pinch of glam’.

SUMMERSET SERIES | No. 2

June 16, 2014

SummersetNo2

Since Summerset entered into our journey, we’ve found that no matter the miles between us and its walls, a slice of our thoughts is perpetually tethered to the City-By-the-Sea. This weekend past was spent with one of our nearest + dearest Pallies-in-Design, Letter From Brooklyn, galavanting about our beloved coastal communities closer to home. However, tucked ever so slightly behind inspiring shoppes and delicious eateries were images of life at the Gilded Getaway, which to date, has yielded nothing less than scintillating scenery (why hello, ombré ocean).

Some of life’s sweetest pleasures are the ‘pinch-me’ moments when one can’t help but pause and reflect. The past few weeks at Summerset, our newly named getaway, have been a chain of those thoughts, strung together like cafe lights twinkling in the night. Renovations to date have been a palatable blend of creative DIY and professional prowess, and with a fresh coat of paint going on as we speak, the proverbial blank canvas makes for an interior feast.

With each passing project, our sweet coastal abode is slowly starting to take shape. The floors, original to the house and dating back to the forties, serve as architectural eye candy with a welcoming embrace. In contrast to nail guns, plaster and the lumber du jour, newly commissioned artwork from a textile artist is well underway. This fiber master renders us weak in the knees with her vision of classically nautical with a TGL ‘pinch of glam’.

The season of fun-in-the-sun has fully arrived, and while this pretty ‘lil lady is far from ready to make her debut, we like to think she’s adjusting quite nicely. Welcome to The Summerset Series, pint-sized servings of life on the coast, which we promise will be (like our credo at Around the Pound), occasionally golden, always deliciously creative.
